Towards a More Responsive UN Security Council: Timor-Leste’s Active Role
Intervention within the framework of the Reform of the United Nations Security Council, discussing the formulation of the text presented by the Co-Presidents providing an overview of the progress of IGN discussions, has been a significant focus for Timor-Leste. The country has emphasized that the Elements Document will only contribute significantly to the IGN if the process is expedited through text-based negotiations, with actionable and transformative language.
Timor-Leste has reaffirmed its commitment to actively engage in this process. They believe that the steps taken must ensure that the UN Security Council becomes more transparent, inclusive, and credible. This is necessary to fulfill its mandate in addressing the challenges posed by global and regional conflicts and crises.
As part of its efforts to enhance the effectiveness of the UN Security Council, Timor-Leste has been involved in discussions focused on formulating more accurate and effective resolution texts. They realize that text-based negotiation processes are key to achieving substantial outcomes in the IGN. Thus, they advocate for concrete steps that can expedite this process while ensuring that the resulting texts have a tangible impact in addressing global security challenges.
Timor-Leste also advocates for greater inclusivity in the discussion of global security issues. They believe that non-member states of the Council should also have a significant role in the decision-making process. This is an important step to ensure that a broader and more diverse perspective is represented in Council decision-making.
In this context, Timor-Leste’s active role has been crucial in accelerating the reform of the UN Security Council. Through their sustained participation and commitment to creating a more responsive, inclusive, and effective global security environment, Timor-Leste has become a significant voice in efforts to strengthen the multilateral system supporting international peace and security.
