Timor-Leste emphasizes that respect for sovereignty is the foundation of true international cooperation

New York, 13 June 2024 – At the UNGA debate on the “Elimination of unilateral extraterritorial coercive economic measures as a means of political and economic compulsion,” Timor-Leste noted how these measures—which violate the UN Charter, various UN resolutions, and the principle of multilateralism—need urgent reevaluation as they contradict the principles of international cooperation and respect for sovereignty, causing harm to innocent populations and undermining global stability.

The practice of unilateral extraterritorial coercive economic measures (UECMs) was introduced and imposed primarily by big and powerful nations over smaller and economically weaker states and can take many forms. The targeted countries have seen the worst of economic hardships and political instability—with the eventual bearing of these measures being the innocent population, mostly the vulnerable groups, the elderly, women, and the youth.

Timor-Leste pushes for the full implementation of the UN resolutions on the elimination of UECMs, as it would foster a more just and equitable economic system, promoting multilateralism and cooperation. The abolishment of such sanctions would encourage economic diplomacy, negotiation, and the development of alternative dispute-resolution mechanisms, avoid trade wars, ultimately leading to a more peaceful and prosperous world.
