Timor-Leste Affirms Commitment to Democracy and Sustainable Development at UN General Assembly
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor-Leste, Dionísio Babo Soares, concluded the participation of Portuguese-speaking countries in the 74th Session of the General Assembly on Monday. In his address, Minister Soares emphasized the continuous assertion of the young Timorese democracy.
“This is a solemn moment, esteemed delegates, where I am honored to represent Timor-Leste in the United Nations General Assembly session. Allow me, first and foremost, to express my gratitude for the trust placed in me as a guardian of democracy in Timor-Leste,” stated Minister Soares.
Commencing his speech with congratulations to the newly elected President of the 70th session of the General Assembly, Minister Soares expressed confidence in the leadership’s capability to guide the session excellently. He also extended congratulations to the predecessor, Her Excellency Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, for her commendable leadership during her tenure.
Expressing gratitude to Secretary-General António Guterres for convening the Climate Action Summit, Minister Soares highlighted the importance of addressing climate change, especially for developing island nations like Timor-Leste, which faces devastating impacts on coastal populations and agriculture.
Acknowledging the significance of environmental preservation, Timor-Leste commits to promoting policies for climate mitigation and adaptation, including the development of renewable energy and sustainable resource management.
Regarding Sustainable Development Goals, Minister Soares reiterated Timor-Leste’s commitment to achieving the targets set in the Agenda 2030. He emphasized the importance of reducing inequality and promoting gender equality, strengthening institutions, promoting the Rule of Law, ensuring women’s participation in politics, and combating gender-based violence.
Minister Soares also highlighted Timor-Leste’s efforts in regional cooperation, such as signing agreements with Australia to resolve maritime border issues and strengthening partnerships with the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP).
In closing, Minister Soares reiterated Timor-Leste’s commitment to the principles and objectives of the UN and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the session. He urged collective efforts towards achieving a fairer, more peaceful, and sustainable world for all.
